beautiful mess

Listen to the MUSTN'TS, child,
      Listen to the DON'TS
      Listen to the SHOULDN'TS
      Listen to the NEVER HAVES
Then listen close to me-
      Anything can happen, child,

~Shel Silverstein

It started out as quiet painting time. Sun pouring through the windows adding warmth and beautiful light into our home. I had a hot cup of coffee and our favorite Pandora station playing. We were both swaying to the music. I noticed she moved like me. She finished a painting with such a proud look on her face and asked if she could paint more. I let go and watched her discover the paint with her hands and tiny toes. I watched her mix paint in awe of new colors forming right before her eyes. I could see her sense of wonder and feel her excitement radiating off of her. She was in her own world and I was along for the ride. She looked up and said "I knew you not be mad mama because your an artist too"

Yes the mess was epic. There was paint everywhere and even in places that didn't seem possible. It took longer to clean up then it took for the mess to be made. It just didn't matter. It simply didn't matter. For a mere moment she was lost in her own discovery. No rules just simple fun where anything can happen. She doesn't get enough of these moments so when she does I am all in. Embracing her fleeting childhood. I'll take a  beautiful mess by my beautiful 4 year old whenever I can.
